Quicksand and Addictions

Spread the love

It’s 4am and thoughts of quicksand wont leave my mind. I can’t stop thinking about how addictions are just like quicksand.

Quicksand is a bit of a misnomer, because it isn’t always, well, sand—it’s any mass of sand, clay, or dirt particles that contains trapped water. The water turns the “sand” into a thick liquid mud that collapses under moving weight. This quicksand then re-solidifies, trapping whatever may have sunk into its depths.

Unlike typical mud, quicksand can appear solid upon first glance. It is not until a person tries to step through it that this ground liquefies under his or her feet.

Sounds familiar right?

That thing that seems solid at first but really isn’t because one step in and you’re kind of stuck for life.

That thing that seems like the real deal but really isn’t because when you’re stuck, you’re left feeling empty and weird because it’s not what it looked like in the first place.

Nothing about it is real, it’s a facade.

But here’s the catch though.

The more you struggle, the deeper you sink.

So when you’re stuck? How do you get out?

Here’s how to get out of quicksand. (According to my google findings)

⁃ Breathe deeply

⁃ Make yourself as light as possible. Remove every weight (Jacket, shoes…etc)

⁃ Keep your arms up and then reach for someone’s hand to pull you out. This person has to be strong enough to lift you out and you can’t do much because any counter movement from you can frustrate the whole process. So you just have to trust in the person’s strength (ability) to pull you up.

I’m sure you get the picture by now.

Like I said, sinking sand is a lot like addictions and sometimes the only way to get out is to stop fighting it.

So let go of every weight, Cast your cares and burdens on him, then reach out and fix your gaze on him. Don’t bother about the how, it’s more about the who and the Jesus I know is beyond capable💛

When I struggled with my addictions, I would try and try and try to stop on my own but it wasn’t working.

So one day, I got fed up and told God how helpless I felt and how tired I was and I remember saying “I’m not trying again”

Then I focused on my relationship with him. I would spend hours talking to him about anything and everything without basking in my guilt or obsessing over my shame and if I’m being honest, I can’t remember how or when exactly it stopped, I just know that it did.

Because this is the thing about addictions. It’s only as strong as the attention you give it.

And like quicksand, it’s a facade. It’s not as solid as it looks.

Stop fighting it. Breathe, release yourself.

Talk to Jesus and just trust.

He loves you to much to leave you stranded❤️
